Cannnot open DOCX files

I use XP/Sp2, Office2003+SP2.

A while ago I installed the Office7 file format patch. I observed recently
that whenever I open DOCX file I get a general error message.
Please advise how to recover this issue.

I would try uninstalling the compatibility pack, reboot, and try downloading
it again. (Don't know if that wil work but it can't hurt.)
