Cannot access Outlook or Office CD

M

Michael

I started with Windows 98. I did a clean install to ME and all worked fine.
I did an upgrade to XP Home. Until XP office worked fine.

I just upgraded to XP. I have office 2000 professional. Now, all
components work but Outlook. AND, I while I can see what is on the CD, I
cannot get setup to run.

After loading XP, I loaded Office 2000. I then got all the critical patches
for XP and for office 2000.

Now, when I try to get into Outlook I get a series of error messages.

1, Your computer has been upgraded from windows 95 0r 98 to a later version
of windows. Outlook must configure itself for this version of windows.
I click OK and am then asked to insert the Office 2000 Pro disk. After
inserting the disk, I click OK.

I then receive:
Outlook was unsuccessful in configuring itself for your new version of
Windows. Please perform a detect and repair. If it is not successful, you
must reinstall Outlook.

I then get:
Cannot start Outlook. A required component is missing: OMINT.dll. Please
install MS Outlook again.

When I click okay, I get a Microsoft error report to send to MS. There is
no suggestions with it.

I have tried to uninstall Office but it cannot find the CD. I insert the CD
and the autorun will not start it. I have accessed the CD and tried to run
setup with no success.

Any help?

Thanks

Did you try the Detect and Repair as it suggested?

run it from Outlook as I can't access Outlook, I tried to run it from Word.
I received the following Windows Installer dialog box:

This patch package could not be opened. Verify that the patch exists and
that you can access it or contact the application vendor to verify that this
is a valid windows installer patch package.

I do not know which patch package they are talking about. I did load all
the critical Microsoft patches.

When I now try to access the Office Update site, when it scans my computer,
it says error: unable to check for updates on this computer

I think I will probably have to delete it and reinstall, however, I don't
know how I can delete it without slicking the drive

Download the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility (see Knowledge Base article
295823 OFF: Error Message: This Patch Package Could Not Be Opened ...
(http://support.microsoft.com/?id=295823) and remove the Installer settings
for Office, and then reinstall Office. Hopefully you will be able to install
it without error. Be sure to stop any real-time anti-virus software during
the installation.

From reading the Knowledge base articles referred to, it appears that the
Cleanup will not work with XP. The have a version for 95, 98, and ME, and
one for NT and 2000.

If we I have the old file, which I can do when I get home, I am wondering if
I can use one of those utilities. I would probably select the ME version as
that is what I uploaded from.

If not. I think it is getting very close to fdisk and format time.

I do really appreciate your efforts to help me find a less extreme way to
resolve it and will explore your suggestions before I leap. I guess I am
just getting frustrated with the problem

Thanks
again. and I am listening.

Upon investigation, I have found that the version of the Windows Installer
Cleanup Utility is not fully compatible with Windows Installer 2.0 and
beyond. I have requested that the Knowledge Base article I referenced
(816273) be modified to reflect this. My apology for any problems my
recommendation may have caused.

No problem.
I got impatient last night and tried to load XP on a clean machine. That
did not work so I slicked again and loaded ME. No problem there. I then
upgraded to XP and am stuck at a point where the install program tells me
that msxml3.dll was not copied correctly. I selected retry with no success.
That is where I am now.
