Cannot find share.exe

Mark

I'm trying to assist a friend with re-installing Excel.
He has a old version of Excel (doesn't know for sure -
possibly 97) and is running Windows ME.

He previously had this installed but ended up
reformatting his system. He's now going back trying to
re-install his software.

He starts to install Excel using the licensed
installation disks but gets an error, "Cannot find
share.exe on system".

Can anyone tell me how to fix this? Is it just a matter
of getting a copy of this file? Where does it belong?
Etc.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Share.exe is an old dos 6.1 file needed to run excel 97/95.

Create folder c:\dos. Get a copy of dos 6.1 and copy
share.exe to that folder. Then edit autoexec.bat.

Sorry I cannot remember how to edit autoexec. But I do
have copy of share.exe if you need it.

Newer versions of windows don't require the guts of the file. They only require
that a file with that name exists.

In fact, the suggestion at the other post showed how to create a 0 byte (no guts
at all!) file with that name.

Thanks,

Use Notepad to create a file (nothing in it). Save it as Share.exe.

The bad news is where to put it. I think it goes in your x:\windows folder, or
x:\windows\system32 or any folder in your path.

Share.exe went away with Windows95 (IIRC). So you can fool excel by making an
empty one.
