cannot get speach recognition to work(XP)

Have configured mic., sucessfully completed several training sessions, tried
different mics., the mic./dictation icon appears ; however when I speak "TOO
LOUD" or "NO SIGNAL" appears to the right of the "little balloon". I've
checked on the Control Panel, language, profile, etc. gone through all
suggestions I could find in help. Using a Toshiba Satellite, Word 2003
