Speech Recognition -- Voice Commands

About 80% of the time the macros I've created using speech recognition work
great: I speak a command into my mic and the text appears in the document I'm
editing (I'm an English teacher; this is how I make comments on students'
papers). But 20% of the time, nothing happens, or the cursor returns to the
start of the paper. I've completed all the voice recognition training. Would
upgrading to a newer version of Word help? My mic is new, but not top of the
line? Is an expensive mic worthwhile? Any tips or tricks you know of?
