Cannot Load Word for Windows 6.0 files

Okay, I got a newer computer recently, upgraded from a Win98SE and I saved
some of my word documents to a disc, and I tried to open some of them on my
Windos XP Computer (I clicked the about thing for the Word and it comes up as
Version 5.1 Home Edition)

When I try to open some of them, I guess that the word I had was pretty old
I guess (I checked the summary and it says Microsoft Word for Windows 95) so
that they can't open. What can I do? I can open them with Notepad, but it
comes up a mess, and most of it is all sorts of characters rather than text.

Please help me! thanks.

Do you actually have Word installed on this new PC? Word is backwards
compatible with older versions.
