Cannot open Publisher 97 file in Pub 97 error

Hi, I am trying to open a Publisher 97 file in Publisher
97. This file was created by someone else on a different
computer. I get an error message saying that Publisher
cannot open files from a different version. However,
when I click on Properties for this file in File Manager,
it says to open the file with Publisher 97. Any help is
greatly appreciated! I tried updating the service packs
for Office 97, although I should probably mention that I
am using Office XP for most of my other Office
applications (i.e. Word, Excel etc.) ~Carol

The problem is with the version. More than likely, the file version is NOT
Publisher 97 that you are trying to open. It is probably a Publisher 98 or
newer file, or even a Publisher 1.0 file. Can you send me the file, so I can
have a look and possibly convert it for you? Send it to (e-mail address removed)

Hi Brian, thanks for your kind offer, unfortunately the
file belongs to someone else and I can't share it. I am
curious as to why the Properties box for this file
says "open with Publisher 97." Does this come from the
fact that I have Pub. 97 on my computer, and not what was
used to create the original file? ~Carol

I don't know why it says that, but that is not something that is produced by
Publisher, but probably by the customer through Windows in the property
dialog.

Yes.

The reason it shows that, is that you only have Publisher 97 installed on
your computer.

If you took a Publisher 2003 file, it would show as Publisher 97 on your
computer.

Hello everyone who took the time to respond to my
question. I talked to the person who originally created
the file, and they have now "fessed up" that their office
has a brand new version of Publisher, not 97 as I was
originally told. Thanks to all for your help and
guidance. ~Carol
