cannot perform a mail merge in word 2003

when I perform a browse to open the datasource (Excel) , the program hangs
and i have to close out of Word through the Program manager.
XP Service Pack is up to date

has this happened to anyone?

A number of people have mentioned this problem recently. I quote Cindy
Meister:

"There are massive problems with the most recent set of updates. There's a
KB
article (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/918165) describing a workaround for
some of the problems. But other people are finding they need to uninstall
the
updates, especially MSO06-015."
