cannot place graphic in table

Word 200
If I format a graphic (created with the drawing toolbar) to 'through' I can place the grphic over text without the text "knowing it is there"., but I would like to place a graphic over text in a table. It won't let me; I drag the graphic to where I would like it to sit over the table, but when I release it, Word drags it outside the table and slightly changes the text positioning in the table - Uh? the place it jumps to seems to be almost random; if I manually drag it a little further away from the table, the original text positioning inside the table reverets to the original

In fact I have never been happy with word2003 tables. When I drag them to where I would like them on the page, they often jump to a new page or the top of the current page (even after setting the correct layout settings) - is this related to my graphics problem

I'm in print layout

Any help please

'fraid not. I tried what you had done with the labels, but the graphic still 'jumps away'. Also, I have shading in the cells and when I set the graphic to 'behind text' it vanishes anyway (or jumps away) - it seems to be almost random

I have had some success by making the graphic 'inline' and placing it that way, but this is not quite the deisred effect, which could only be achieved by allowing me to place the graphic freely 'on top of' the table - I get the feeling that this may be simply impossible with Word

The ruse using autotext to place the graphics should work reliably. The copy
and paste seems a tad hit and miss for my taste, so when I can access my web
server I will make some changes to that page. At the moment the web server
is playing silly wotsits. This often seems to happen on public holidays :(
