Don't bother. Registration does nothing other than sign you up for an
email newsletter.

I had the same problem, and I gave up twice trying to reach a human at MS.
Looks like a case of the product getting released before the registration software was updated. I'll try again in a week or two. In the meantime, it doesn't seem to matter.

I had the same problem. I tried multiple times and received the same massage: "invalid ID". I give up.

I keep getting an invalid product ID error. Got tired and gave up. This kind of problem reminds me why I changed to MAC. MS get your stuff together PLEASE!!

PLEASE read the other posts - yes the website is hosed up, but ALL that
registration does is sign you up for an e-newsletter.

Wait a couple of weeks and try again - you lose NOTHING.

Same for me. Invalid Product ID # . Microsoft suggests you go to help menu and click on About for the Product ID. Tried that and it does not appear to exist either. Awesome MS!

Same here. I don't care that it doesn't provide anything more than signing up: it should work, period.

That said: it's the only fault I've found so far. Pretty pleased with everything else!

Granted, it should work!

OTOH, if the only issue you have with Office is about something that has
nothing to do with Office, that's pretty good!

Same problem. The registration form will not accept my Product ID number as valid. I'm trying, in vain, on the phone RIGHT NOW to get this problem resolved. I've got 1/2 hour in so far with customer service!!!

You're wasting time. ALL that registration does is allow you to sign up
for an electronic newsletter, which you can do at

why doesn't Microsoft address this problem

and why don't they let you cut and paste it from somewhere instead of transcribing it by eye

I had the same problem: a valid PID but no joy in registering. Forget trying to cut and paste; that doesn't work either. Maybe Apple will get iWork to be cutting edge and then Microsoft can beg Google to buy them. Otherwise, I might just decide OpenOffice or NeoOffice is the better way to go.

Hi Joseph,

Don¹t sweat the registering. It only adds your name to the Microsoft email
list. The products will work just as well without registering.

What makes you think they are not addressing this problem? You can¹t
reasonably expect instantaneous, real-time turn around on problem fixes.

There have been a myriad of problems with the Office 2008 release and the
overhaul of Mactopia. Since the product registration does NOTHING to the
product functionality, my guess is that other problems that DO affect
functionality have higher priority.

Nevertheless, be patient. All this stuff will be fixed in time. (Maybe
longer than some of us are willing to wait for, but fixed eventually.)

I'm glad to see this blog. Thought I was having a serious case of
dyslexia trying to enter the product ID. Don't you have to be
registered to have support?

Thanks.

Not on this list. :)

Microsoft offers very little support. You would need the registration key if
you every needed to prove you owned Office to get a new CD as an example.

The registration problem has been fixed, however if anyone is still having any issues registering we'd appreciate hearing about it.
