Cannot replace selected text

In the past if I am typing and I make a mistake I highlight the text I don't
want and simply over write it with the new text. However, now the
highlighted text remains. The only way I can remove text I don't want now is
by highlighting it and deleting it. Is there a setting I can change that
allows me to REPLACE selected text?

If you are experiencing this problem in Microsoft Word, then in
Word, click on Tools | Options | Edit | check the "Typing
replaces selection" box | OK. Otherwise, please give us a hint
as to the program name and version that you're talking about...

Der Garfield-n-odie,

Thank you very much for solving this problem for me. It was annoying me
more in MS Outlook as that is the software I use most often, but then I
realised that the editor for MS OUtlook is Word. I made the changes you
suggested in Word and it's all working again. Thanks so much.
