can't clear the backlog

My e-mail works fine on my PC with an ADSL connection.
I bought a laptop so I could work away from home and use GPRS from my
mobile phone to download my e-mails.
My laptop seems to want to download hundreds of back e-mails over the
past ten days which is unmanageable over a mobile phone connection.
I plugged my ADSL cable into my laptop and downloaded all the back
e-mails and then deleted them.
The next time I used my laptop it wanted to download them all again. I
have made sure my settings in options are exactly the same but I can't
fix the problem.
Any ideas please ?
