can't get outlook to alert my messages

Can anybody help me!!!!!!!! I needmto set up outloo so
that when a new message arrives, outlook alerts me.
Anybody got any ideas

Have you done Tools =>Options =>Email Options => Advanced
email options?
I am assuming your outlook version is quite recent.
