I am now having problems getting a sound file to play
during a presentation, but I'm not getting any error
messages.

Is it possible that I have changed something to not play
window media files .wma

What version of Windows are you running? What version of PowerPoint?

I did that and the sound will play there, but it still will not play in the presentation.

Go to Start > Run and type mplay32.exe and press OK to open the MCI player
(which PowerPoint uses). Try playing your WMA file. If it doesn't play,
read the information at
http://www.soniacoleman.com/Tutorials/PowerPoint/multimedia.htm. You may
have installed something that modified your MCI settings.

I did that and selected the wma fila and it played, it showed under menu Device it has direct show checked. I went to insert the same file into powerpoint, and it would not play!

The only other thing that I can think of is that possibly the link has been
broken, or it's not set to run automatically.

How do you find that the link is broken?

It does ask when I insert the sound file if I want it to play automatically or not, I click yes.

The link will break if you move either the presentation or the sound file,
unless both are in the same folder and you move them both to a new place.

If I were you, I would delete the sound from your presentation, copy the
sound file to the same folder as your presentation, and then re-link to the
sound from the presentation. Once you have done that, set up the animation
and let us know if you still have errors.

I'm not sure what is going on, I can now get some songs from media player to play in the presentation, but not others. I tried copying the sound file to the same folder and it still will not play, I wonder now if it may have something to do with the Windows Media Player and the way it is copying the music into folders. Can you help?

Copying the files to the same folder is not enough. As Kathy said, you must
delete the file from the presentation and then re-insert it so that the link
will be re-constructed correctly.

To move the files, just do a copy/paste (Ctrl + C/Ctrl + D) into the folder
where the presentation is stored. Then open PowerPoint, open the
presentation, delete the audio files, insert the audio files using Insert >
Movies and Sounds > Sound from file.

Sonia, I did the copy/paste into the same folder and that didn't work. I tried opening a new presentation and I can get some of the songs from Windows Media Player to work and others will not. What would cause this?

I think it's got something to do with Windows Media Player 9.0. Although
that *shouldn't* affect the way sound files play in PPT, it sure seems
to. Problem is, I don't know what the problem is, so I can't offer a
solution.

If I were in your shoes, I'd probably open the WMA in a sound editing
program and resave it as an MP3 or something. Those seem to be more
reliable than WMA files in PPT.
