I have never tryed to install Office 97 on XP before but I have tyryed

strange, and I think it has everything to do with XP-SP2.
Correct. There have been several problems installing Office 97 on XP with
SP2. Here are some fixes along with some problems associated with each:
1. Remove SP2, install Office97 and ALL SRs and all updates, then re-install
SP2.
Problem: This isn't possible if SP2 is part of the XP cd so....
2. Install Office97 w/o any of the HTML options.
Problem: You may want the HTML options and you won't be allowed to install
updates, particularly SR2 so....
3. Try this fix from Bob Buckland:

MS Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2) disabled the
HTMLMarq.ocx (active x control) for security reasons.
If you're not going to use the web page features you
can do a custom install and choose to not install the
Web Authoring tools or use the following technique
(not a MS supported one)
to modify both .ocx files whose names start with HTMLm
in this registry key
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Image
File Execution Options
from .ocx to .old
This article has information on modifying the registry

Problem: It doesn't always work, it didn't work on my machine.
4. Upgrade to newer version of Office. This is guaranteed to work and has no
drawback other than the cost and since some versions such as Office XP are no
longer the "latest and greatest" they can be had at discount.
Hope this helps...
