Can't load custom dictionary

Running Publisher98. Suddenly after a reload it tells me it can't load
the custom dictionary and will use the default dictionary. Can I fix
this? Where do I find the dictionaries? What is their extension? Doesn't
seem to be DIC.

Not that I know of.

Windows XP Home. Word 2001 SR-1. No Office. Works Suite 2001, most of which I
uninstalled. There is an Office Directory in Program Files but there is
nothing significant in it.
