can't open old files

When I press the "open file" button the program ( excel, word) stops.

NEI (not enough information). What do you mean by "stops"...? Word isn't
animated, therefore it isn't moving, so it cannot "stop". Are you saying it
just "locks up"? Do you receive any errors? What version of Office are you
running and what version was used to create the files? Have you tried opening
them on another system?

Sorry - stop was not the right word. Locks is better I guess. When I want to
close the program I get the message, the the program doesn't answer. I run
Office 2003 and have updated it. I have created the documents with the same
version.
I have now also found out, that I cannot save new documents.

When I open the files this way: Start/documents it works fine.

What happens when you try to save? Have you activated Office (either by
converting the trial, or activating your purchased licence)? If you have
purchased/activated, then do you have NAV installed? If so, disable the
Office plugin and try again.

Please post back.

1) I wouldn't know, I don't have NAV (I use a Mac). Suggest you RTFM.

2) What "certain file" - I'm not psychic! Why are you messing with the
Windows installer - are you attempting to reinstall Office? If so, why?

3) You never answered my other question - have you activated it - either by
converting the trial or activating your purchased licence? If you haven't
then that's why you cannot save - saving is disabled once the trial period
has expired and no amount of reinstallation will cure that.

Answer the questions you have been asked, please.
