Can't patch Office XP Professional - How to Uninstall?

Hi All,

I have Win2000 Pro running and I installed Office XP (picked the
complete radio button).

There did not appear to be anything wrong until I got to the end. After
the installation completed a message box popped up saying 'The version
numbers were not as expected' (wording is something like this, I don't
remember the exact wording). Well, I loaded Word, Excel, PowerPoint and
Access (did not try Outlook) and they all seemed to run fine.

I then started to install service packs. I first tried to install SP3
but it generated an error report that I did not send to MS. I then
loaded Word and the version information stated that I had SP3 installed.
I do not think this is right but that's was it states.

Anyway, according to MS there are some patch files missing from some
hidden directory. I can not even uninstall Office XP because of this error.

My question, how do I uninstall Office XP when the uninstaller does not
work?

Thanks for any help,

Charles

Hi, Charles,

If uninstall from the Windows Control Panel doesn't work, then you can try
the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility to remove registry entries related to
Office XP.

Description of the Windows Installer CleanUp Utility:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;290301

Try to reinstall it again after cleaning out the registry.

If you get errors again, you'll want to post the exact error message(s) back
to this newsgroup so that someone can help you diagnose the problem. Either
that, or search for the error message in the Microsoft Knowledge Base
(http://search.support.microsoft.com/search/?adv=1)

For example, this might be the patch package error you're seeing, but it's
hard to be sure if you don't write down the whole message.

You receive the "This patch package could not be opened" errror message in
Office 2003, in Office XP, or in Office 2000:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;295823

Hi Susan,

Thanks for the links. I had already found the Windows Installer CleanUp
Utility but I choose not to use it because of the warning about messing
up other programs and having to reinstall them.

I guess I will just have to go through the registry and do the best I can.

Thank you,

Charles
