Can't print 2xA5 to a page

I can't figure out how to print an A5 layout 2 to a page in Word2004. Epson D78 printer and Mac OSX 10.3.9.
I start with my layout in A4, (page setup paper size) and portrait orientation, (I tried landscape, but it screws up the layout), and set it to print 2 on a page, but it only prints 1 on one side. Am I missing somethingt?

Are you telling it to print multiple copies?

Sounds like there is only 1 page in the file, so it is printing it on
half a sheet.
