Can't Save Items in Outlook Calendar

I'm running Outlook 2003, stand-alone (no Exchange Server and as part of a new
install of Office 2003). If I try to create a new Calendar item, the window to
do so never opens. If I am looking at my calendar, say the daily view, and I
just click on one of the time slots and start typing, when I hit enter I
receive an error message, "Can't save item."

I don't seem to have any problems with contacts, e-mail, or to do items.

What could be causing this?
