I remember a seeing driver for something in WU. I opted not to install that
one. Hearing this I'll make sure I never do.

Surprisingly, almost all the computers I come in contact with and use,
including laptops are almost always new. And the updated drivers appear on
Windows Update and I have always installed every single driver update (and
update on WU in general) and never had an issue.

But of course everyone that has a bad experience is more apt to point those
out, as was with your Toshiba laptop. I will never buy one because of your
experience.

I did it once. My computer had to be reformatted. I learned my lesson
good.

See what the driver update is for, then go to the manufacturer of that piece
of hardware's website and install the updates from there.
That's ridiculous.

It may be ridiculous, but it's my experience

YMMV, etc. I haven't had anyone else's experiences, surprisingly.
One other thing. Your post makes it sound as if MS wrote the drivers in
question which you surely know not to be true. The video drivers are
written by the card's manufacturer and only certified by MS. In plain
English, you could possibly dl exactly the same drives from two
different sites. So don't blame WU for bad (if in fact is was) video
drivers.
BTW, I've gotten both ATI and Matrox drivers from WU.

No, after reformatting my machine I did some research and found that many
other users had had similar problems caused by WU's driver updates, and
advised against using them. The path advised was that which I mentioned -
using the WU driver update as a sign to look on the manufacturer's wesite.

The drivers in question were for an IDE controller (which it turned out I
didn't even have - congratulations Windows Update on suggesting them)

Microsoft repackage the drivers to go on the WU site.
