Can't update Office 2008 to 12.2.0

Version: 2008
Operating System: Mac OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard)
Processor: Intel

Hi,

I've just purchased and installed a new Office 2008 pack on a new iMac. However, I can't update my current Office 2008 12.1.0 version to 12.2.0.

I've tried to use the Microsoft AutoUpdate method but it keeps downloading the update again and again but never gets to installing it.

I then tried to download the update manually from the MacTopia website and when I tried to install it, I got the error message "the installation has failed". After then, I couldn't launch any of the Office softwares.

I uninstalled and re-installed Office 2008 many times (both manually and/or using the Office 2008 uninstall utility). I repaired my HD permissions, removed all the Microsoft Preferences but the same problem keeps occuring again and again.

I contacted Microsoft support in France (I bought the product in France) but they were useless as the only answer I got by email was an explanation on how to launch Microsoft AutoUpdate (I guess they didn't even read my support request).

Any idea how I could solve this problem?

Thanks in advance!

May seem like a silly question, but let's get it out of the way first :)

.... Are you sure you have an English version? IOW, are you using the
appropriate language updater? Mac Office is Language-specific, so the
English SP2 will not update a French version of Office or vice-versa.

BTW: Reinstalling on a Mac is *rarely* the direction to take. All you're
basically doing is ripping out stuff & replacing it with another copy
(usually an older, outdated copy) of the same thing ‹ and that's rarely the
stuff that's at the root of the problem.

One thing that might be worth mentioning is that I had the Office trial version installed for a few days on my Mac before installing the full version (the apple Premium reseller where I bought Office 2008 didn't have it in stock and advised me to install the trial version while waiting for the delivery of the full product). I was able to update the trial version to 12.2.1. I had to uninstall the trial version as it wouldn't accept the product key that came with my full version... I then installed the full version that I was able to validate with the product key that came with it but I can't update it...

That 'could' make a difference as far as the initial installation, but if
you were able to get the full version installed it shouldn't be a factor
now. Try this method:

Log out the hold the Shift Key while you log back in [make sure you're
logging in as an Admin]. Then try applying the SP2 update. Make sure to
restart your Mac before launching any programs if the update works. If it
still balks have a look at the suggestions here:

You should have removed the trial version along with Microsoft preferences.

There are two ³things² you want to remove before installing the retail over
the trial:

1) The full Microsoft Office 2008 folder and

2) the Microsoft Office Settings 2008.plist in
~/Library/Preferences/Microsoft/Office 2008

I suggest you start over by removing these files and doing a re-install.

I have the same problem with update 12.2.1. I'm also running Snow Leopard and installed the trial version before loading the program from a disk. Yes, I had to delete the trial version before I could get Office to run.

But none of that explains the fact that it is the update that kills the program. I finally got Office 2008 to run for a week. But when I installed update 12.2.1, it delivered the error message that the installation failed and killed the program. In other words, I could not open either Word or Excel.

The only solution was to get out the program disk & reinstall it. And, of course, avoid the update like the plague it seems to be.

I also have this problem. I installed the trial version first. Then purchased and installed the student version of Office 2008. When I was asked to download the update, a message said there was an error and it would not install. Then office crashed. I uninstalled both and also the "plist" under library.
I have given up trying to update but wonder if that is going to be a problem. Could there be other places on the computer that have leftover files from the trial version that need to be uninstalled? I have Mac OS X 10.6.1

Hi All,

I have exactly the same problem with the 2008 update.

• Installed the trial on Snow Leopard with the update - no problem
• Bought the Student version and removed all the trial parts - user and
system lib
• Installed fresh new version
• Auto update then downloaded 12.2.0
• Ran the installer and on the last screen 'failed'
• Original install - that did work - now dead and having to start again :-(

I'm not wasting any more time on the update until someones confirms it will
work...

I have the same problem.

1. Installed 12.0 from install media - OK.
2. Installed 12.1 from auto update or command line - OK.
3. Installed 12.1.9 from gui or command line (installer -pkg
Office2008-12.1.9.mpkg -target /) - OK
4. Attempt install to 12.2 from 12.1.0 or 12.1.9 using AU or command line
and the update KILLS all Office2008 programs every time.

Then back to step 1! after removing Office2008 components as described by
Diane earlier in this thread.

The 12.2.0 update has a major flaw that renders the Office suite of
applications useless. The following is an excerpt from the failed

I'm stuck at 12.1.9... HELP!

Also delete these file/folders:

1) the Microsoft folder in Application support

/Library/Application Support/Microsoft/

2) all receipts in the Receipts folder that start with office2008

/Library/Receipts/

Be sure to empty the trash before trying to reinstall. I finally got around
to testing this out myself and the original tips I was given were faulty.

I'm really tired so hope I haven't let anything out.

If you are doing this on Snow Leopard, install Snow Leopard again. It
installs like a combo.

Otherwise, the only other solution I've seen reported is to re-install the
OS from scratch. If you could do this on a partition to test, I would try
that first.

I did a clean install of Snow Leopard and Office and it only took 7.5 GB.

Surely reinstalling Snow Leopard can't be the answer to this problem... How can MS expect us to lose time doing a complete OS clean reinstall because of a faulty MS update?

Doing a clean install isn't the problem but reconfiguring a machine with all its software is time consuming (specially when this has already been recently done after Snow Leopard recent release)

Hi Diane,

installing Snow Leopard as a combo, does this mean, that all applications
and settings will remain?
How will this overwrite any Microsoft settings which might cause the problem
of installing a licenced office version after having used the trial version
of office?
I hope I will not have to format the hard disc and install a clean copy of
snow leopard? This would result in a half day of work!?

I have a similar situation. I have removed everything as per that
website, and I still cannot install the 12.2.0 update. It fails every
time. I guess I will just leave it at 12.1 for now.

Office 2008 works under Leopard, and it works for most users under Snow
Leopard. Snow Leopard just isn't mature now and issues like this are normal.
It's a price you pay to be on the bleeding edge.

Have you tried doing a Safe Boot mode to run the updaters?

To start up in safe mode:
1. Shut down your computer and wait 10 seconds.
2. Press the power button.
3. Immediately after you hear the startup tone, hold down the Shift
key.
You should press the Shift key as soon as possible after you hear the
startup tone, but not before.
4. Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple logo and
progress indicator (spinning gear).

Continue to log into your User's account. Run the updaters.

To leave safe mode, restart the computer normally without holding down any
keys during startup.

Yes, it simply refreshes files like a combo updater does.
How will this overwrite any Microsoft settings which might cause the problem
of installing a licenced office version after having used the trial version
of office?

It's not guaranteed to work, but some users have reported that it worked for
them. Others said they had to do an "Erase & Install" of the OS.

Try the Safe Boot Mode to see is that works. It's in the previous post to
<[email protected]>.
