Caption and cross reference with equations

I'm trying to do a cross reference to an equation, say for instance "3+1=4 (1)" where (1) is the caption. When I insert the cross reference in my document, it includes the caption AND the equation. In other words, I wan it to show "see equation (1)" but it shows "see equation 3+1=4 (1)". Does anybody know how to solve this? Thx.
