Maybe add a small colored rectangle from the drawing toolbar?

Put an AutoShape rectangle in the cell with only half the height of the cell.
Fill the AutoShape with any color. If you want to see "behind" the color,
adjust the transparency of the AutoShape

xl2007 offers a lot of formatting possibilities under conditional formatting (I
think??).

I, initially read that as xl12007 and thought MVPs had a very advance
version of the 12007 release. :)
