I don't know what type of formatting you're having difficulty with, but I
have run into the following:

Assuming that you're trying to format numbers, the problem may be that Excel
doesn't realize that they are numbers. If this is the case, the way I've
been dealing with it is to use the VALUE function to convert the "numbers"
into real numbers.

So, for example, assume that column A is full of these "numbers". Find a
blank column or insert a column. Write a formula in that column such as
=Value(A2). Then, copy and paste values everything from that new column back
into column A. then delete your new column.

Perhaps this isn't your problem, or perhaps someone else has an easier way
to deal with it.

On those cells, when I go to 'Format' on the menu, the 'Cells' option i
greyed out, the 'format' box won't appear, so I can't set any colours

I don't know why or how this happens, but I was able to fix it without
re-creating the worksheet. Highlight the worksheet area and paste into a new
workbook. Co not copy the worksheet using the "move / copy" command from
right-clicking the sheet tab name. It will not work. Good Luck

I am having the same problem as Mamarapha. I have tried your solution but it
causes Excel to crash everytime. Any other suggestions?
