Changing duration against a task that has hours posted

Hi All

I'm in a quandry with a situation in MS Project. I'm using MS Project
Server 2003, SP1.

Initially, I had a task that ran 8/1/06-3/30/06. The task was going to
be handled by two people:
Guy 1 would be on the project 8/1/2006 - 11/30/2006. He was added
from the Enterprise Pool.
Guy 2 's identity had not been determined, so we plugged in a local
resource and set his time from 12/01/2006 - 03/30/2006.

The wrinkle was that Guy 1 had four tasks, that broke down into the
following percentages:

Task 1: 32%
Task 2: 12%
Task 3: 24%
Task 4: 12%

(This adds up to 80%, I know. We don't load resources at 100% units--
we throttle back to 80% to meet estimates.)

This worked out OK; I was able to split the work across the two people.
Project baselined, etc. No problem. Yesterday, Guy 1 posted his time
against his task, so now there are 40 hours reported against this task.
Everything's fine.

Now the problem. I found out late yesterday that Guy 2 had been
identified, but the times had shifted as follows:
Guy 1 would be on the project 8/1/2006 - 11/03/2006. So he's got
fewer hours.
Guy 2 will join the project 11/06/2006 - 11/06/2007. He will have
the same task percentages as mentioned.

How do I Change Guy 1's timeframe so that he will show his end date as
11/03/2006, without messing up his already posted hours and
percentages?

Thanks in advance.

Best bet is to split the screen (window menu / split) and put the gantt
chart in the top and the resource usage view in the bottom. You can then
edit the future work manually to make things work out.
