changing how cursor looks in Word

I hadn't noticed this until today so I think this is a new issue, but when I open a Word doc, the cursor shows up like a little clock. It's not spinning or anything, just sitting there. It makes it very difficult to see where I've got the cursor positioned. I'd really like it to show up as an arrow. Any ideas?

I've seen one or two reports of this lately & it really shouldn't be
happening - that symbol is a throwback to the Classic Mac OS. I'm honestly
not sure what's causing it, but how long has it been since you shut down &
restarted your Mac? Do you leave Word running for extended periods of time -
such as more than a "typical" 14 hour workday? What happens if you
Quit/Launch Word? Restart the Mac?

I don't remember seeing that since OS9 days.
if The Mac computer is taking time to do something you get the color version of the
spinning pizza wheel.

If an application is taking time doing something, you get a very minuscule B&W
version of the spinning pizza wheel. Either could be caused by not enough system
RAM. Not enough swap space on the Hard Drive, or some type of Drive problem either
permissions or something fixable by DiskWarrior , Disk Utilities or TechTool
