Changing the Baseline in a Cell

Ann

I thought at one time when you Baseline the field is locked and cannot
make manual changes unless you re Baseline. Now after I Baseline I can
go ahead and make manual changes to a Baseline field on individual
tasks. I have pm's that change the Baseline per task to accommodate the
results.

Thanks AJ

Ann,
Think of all baseline fields as taking a snapshot of their respective
dynamic fields. Baseline fields in Project have always been editable by
the user either by re-baselining or by simply editing the value in the
individual field.

I would caution you however on allowing any users to make manual changes
to the baseline "to accommodate the results". The whole point of a
baseline is to provide a basis for tracking. If the baseline is
"adjusted", it no longer is a true reflection of the original plan.

That's a training issue. At worst if you compare an older baseline that has
been changed without approval then it is a disciplinary action.

I agree 100%, the original baseline is never changed. You can set other
baseline if required. I wish the baseline dates in projects could not be
touched.

Hi Ann,

You could always copy the baseline information to empty fields or, perhaps,
to Excel, where you can thence check for changes, or write a macro to
automaically overwrite them back to the original.

I believe it's a training issue if they don't know any better. If
they've been told not to do this, it's a much bigger issue, and far
more difficult to deal with.

It's like sending members of the administration to an ethics class to
correct their many problems. In reality, they know what they're doing
is unethical, but they choose to do it to further their goals. No
"training", ethics or otherwise, can change that. It's not lack of
knowledge that's the problem, it's lack of ethics!

Ann,

PMs are not to be trusted :)

Fortunately many are not the sharpest knife in the drawer.

One idea would be to save the real baseline to baseline10. Another idea is
to tell them it sets a flag in the software that you routinely review.

Good Luck,

David
