Hi, Jesse,

Press Ctrl+Shift+Home to select everything from the current cursor
position back to the beginning of the document. On the Tools menu,
click Word Count. The character count -- both with and without spaces
-- is in the middle of that dialog.

When you've seen the count, click OK. Then press the right arrow key
once to return the cursor to its original position.

[Note: If you happen to hit another key while all that text is
selected, and accidentally zap it, don't panic! Remember that the Edit
Undo command (Ctrl+Z) will restore it, as long as you don't close
the document.]
