Characters jumping around the page

When typing documents or composing or replying to emails the characters
suddenly start jumping around the page on to another line - up or down -
which is very annoying. I never used to have this problem. Has anyone come
across this before and how do I rectify it?

Are you using Word? If so, what version? If not, what are you using?

What do you mean by "characters jump"? Are you saying the insertion
point moves around while you are typing? Or are you saying the
characters start moving around and jumping up and down while you are
watching the page? ;-)

The insertion point moves and therefore the characters I am typing end up in
the wrong place

As Bob suggested, you're likely using a laptop with a touch pad. You
might try modifying the sensitivity in the Mouse Properties and see if
that makes a difference.

Thanks Bob and Beth I think that might be the answer. I always use a mouse
with my laptop and usually the touch pad is switched off but I have just
realised that it is switched on!
