Check box field in a form

How to change symbol displayed by check box field in a form? I would like to
change it from a cross to a tick symbol.

There is no easy way to do this in a protected form. The formfield only has
an X. There are a number of ways to create and use clickable checkboxes in
documents / templates. Some require protected or locked forms, others do
not. Take a look at the Checkbox template available at
http://www.addbalance.com/word/download.htm#CheckboxAddIn for an exploration
of these.
