Checking messages remotely

I can connect to my exchange server from a remote location
however when I hit send and receive once I'm connected to
synchronize my selected folders I synchronize all the
messages in my selected Inbox, even those that i have
already read. How can i prevent all the messages in the
Inbox from being synchronized and only update those that I
still have not read.

Any help would be appricated
