Checking of email account

I am running Outlook 2003 (11.5608.5606) out of Windows 2000 professional
version 5.0.2195 service pack 4 Build 2195.
Outlook will check the pop account for email on initial boot-up but I kep
getting a cannot connect ewrror when it does automatic checks.
I can't figure out why it will check and find the pop account at the
beginning but not later.
Any ideas?
