Clear leveling

Gil

Hi
In an old post about resource leveling I saw the following sentence:
"To level one resource at a time, you must deselect the "Clear
leveling values before leveling" option in the Resource Leveling
dialog".
What is the logic behind this? and why only for "one resource at a
time" leveling and not "All together" leveling?

One more question on this subject, if I may:
Why these two scenarios do not give the same result, and when should I
use which method:
1) Click "Level Now" when "Clear leveling values before leveling"
check-box is checked
2) Click "Clear Leveling" button (at the bottom of the dialog box) and
then click "Level Now"

Thanks for the help..

Hello Gil,

I don't agree with the comment that Clear leveling values before
leveling has anything to do with leveling one resource at a time. To
level only one resource at a time, make sure you use the Resource
Leveling command from a resource view (Resource Usage for example)
instead of a task view (Gantt chart for example.) If you level with a
Resource view active, you'll get the option to level the entire list
of resources or just the selected resource.

The button Clear leveling is only available if you are in a task view.
So if you are leveling from a resource view, the option "Clear
leveling values before leveling" will remove leveling from tasks the
selected resource is assigned to.

I hope this helps. Let us know how you get along.

Juie, Thanks so much for the help. I will repeat my second question:
How come the result I get after leveling with the "clear leveing
values" checked is different from the result I get after clicking the
"Clear leveling" and then clicking "Level now"? both actions are taken
from a Task view... Will "clear leveling values" clears leveling
values ONLY from tasks that are about to be leveled again??
Thanks,
Gil

Hi Gil,

It's tough for me to explain why things are different without seeing your
project file specifically. Try switching to the Leveling Gantt View and
experiment with both options. I believe the "Clear Leveling" button removes
leveling delay plus splits from all tasks. When you click the Clear leveling
button, I assume you are clearing leveling from all tasks?

You might also like to add the field preleved start or preleved finish to
see what project is doing a bit more clearly. I find that if I do not use
the "Clear leveling button" and re-leveling a project the preleved start
field changes on the second pass -- even if no additional leveling has been
done.

I hope this helps.
