Compatibility Pack

I am using Office 2007 and my office they are using an older of office.

Now they have downloaded the compatibility pack and when they open my files
it tells them READ ONLY.

My question is: Can they save the file in plain old DOC format and then use
the file as they like?

I don't have 2007 but on older versions "read only" meant you couldn't
update the file. It was still possible to save the data in a new
non-read-only file using File->Save As. Obviously, if you use a
2007-unique feature, it would get lost.
