Hi Running Office 2003 Pro. Someone has sent me a Word 2007 files (
created by the beta 2 version). I have downloladed the Compatibility tool
and installed, but when i try and open document I am getting an error
message " This is a pre-release version of the compatibility Pack and can
only open pre-Release Office 2007 files".

Um well I downloaded the tool today and the document that was sent is a
pre-release document so does anyone know whats going on?

Thanks

Hi Alex,

There can be some problems (and the error messages in the compatibility tool aren't always quite 'right' :( ) between beta and
final Office 2007 files.

Is the file you were sent a .docx/.docm document file or a .dotx/.dotm template file? The compatability tool, unfortunately,
doesn't support Word 2007 template files for older versions, and that is an error message you can get when trying to open a
template.

In Word, in Tools=>Options=>General, turn on
[x] Confirm Conversions on open
then use File open on the same file. Does the popup dialog recognize the file as a Word 12/2007 document?

The person sending the file may need to resave as a .DOC or .DOT classic file format version from that end and send it to you.

I am using XP SP2, all critical updates installed and Office 2003 SP2, all
critical updates installed. I received a docx file from a person using
Office 2007.

I installed the recommended Compatibility Pack from Microsoft,
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...70-3ae9-4aee-8f43-c6bb74cd1466&DisplayLang=en.

When I tried to open the docx file, I received the following error message.
"This is a pre-release version of the Compatibility Pack and can open
pre-release Office 2007 files only. Do you want to check for a newer version
of the Compatability Pack?" When I responded Yes, I was returned to this
same web page.

KnowledgeBase has a workaround listed for Excel and PowerPoint but not for
Word documents.

I found 3 threads regarding this same problem but no solution. Is there a
new Compatibility Pack scheduled soon or are we stuck because of the format
change?

Thank you.
