Upto 2003, ppt, pps, pot, htm,html,mht,mhtml gets opened in powerpoint. pptx
is the format in 2007

You can actually open quite a lot of file types in PPT.

In addition to the PPT PPS POT HTM HTML MHT and MHTML (as well as the 2007
formats PPTX PPSX PPTM PPSM POTX POTM) that vindys mentioned, it can also
open "outlines" saved in these formats: TXT RTF DOC WPD WPS DOCX DOCM WK1
WK3 WK4 XLS XLS MCW

Also PPA and PPAM (PowerPoint add-ins).

PowerPoint 2007 will also open PowerPoint XML presentations (XML) and Office
Themes (THMX). It has fewer outline opening options, though, as the WK* and
XLS and MCW file types are missing there.

It can also 'import/insert' allsorts of graphics and movie formats.

e.g JPG GIF PNG etc
e.g. WMV, MPG, etc
