% Complete

In MS Project when I switch to the tracking gantt view and enter & complete I
am getting a decimal number in the remainging duration and actual duration.
How am I getting a decimal if the task is 100% complete?

I am in tracking gantt view. I am entering 100% complete in the %comp.
column. I know that actual duration = %complete * duration, however, I dont
understand why the remaining duration column has 2.18. the total duration
for the project is 57 days, on the task I marked 100% the duration was 2
days. This task is part of a research phase. The total duration for the
research phase is 8 days.

Te,

I assume there is zero remaining duration on the task you've mark 100%
complete and the remaining duration (in decimal) is on the summary level
task?

Is this the same master project as your other question? If so, see my reply
to you about the duration calculation in the master project.

I hope this helps. Let us know how you get along.

Hi Julie! This is a different project I am working on. When I switch to
tracking gantt view everything is at 0 to begin with. then I enter 100% in
the %complete column, but in the row where the summary task is the act
duration columns says 1.06 days and the remaining duration says 55.94 days.
The total duration for the project is 57 days. The task that I marked
complete is 1 day, and it is part of a research phase. The research phase
summary task has a duration of 7 days.

The percent complete of summary tasks is a weighted value, an "effective
progress" measure not directly related to the arithmetic sum of the
completion percentages of the subtasks nor is the summary actual duration
the arithmetic sum of their actual duration. The "% Complete" of a summary
task is computed by summing the input actual durations of its subtasks and
dividing by the sum of the total durations of the subtasks, times 100. This
"Summary % Completed" is then multiplied by the summary task's duration to
compute the (effective) Actual Duration of the summary. This way the actual
duration of the summary task is independent of the linking of the subtasks
as well as any lag or lead times in the links.

Hello Te,

It sounds like you are "off" by about 1/2 hour somewhere. First,
change the display of your dates to show time - Tools>Options, View
tab, and select a date format that shows time and date.

Again, check the calendar working time (Tools > Change Working time)
and the settings in Tools > Options Calendar. Does the start/finish
time in the Tools > Options, Calendar page match your calendar?

Do you have resources assigned to the tasks? What is their calendar
definition?

I hope this helps. Let us know how you get along.
