Completely deleting deleted messages

U

Uncle Joe

Using Outlook 2000 on Windows XP Home OS.

For years, I've been reading how deleted messages can be recovered
from a HD. It seems that the messages in Outlook are routed to a
hidden file after being deleted..

Does anyone know which file on my HD stores previously-deleted
messages? Can this hidden file be safely deleted, or is there a tool
which will clean this file of messages? I don't like the idea of my
deleted messages being available to hackers who attack my system.

Thanks very much.

Usually if you delete the messages, empty your Deleted Items folder then
compact your PST then info should be gone.

BTW, how many hackers are attacking your system? I'd be more concerned about
firewalls, virus scanners, etc to combat them

Oh, I've tried to protect my system with Norton Internet Security 2005
and Spyware Doctor. Ran a security analysis this morning and Norton
says I'm well protected. Still, I get 3-5 popups a day in bottom-right
corner of my screen indicating that a virus tried to attack my system
but access was denied. A moment ago I got a popup indicating that a
program was trying to access my email addresses in Outlook. All of
this makes me nervous.

One last question: how does compress the .pst file? Have never seen
anything on this subject.

Thanks for your assistance.

Thanks, Vince. The KB article was exactly what I needed. The
compression approach is not exactly intuitive.
Oh, my PC is connected to a LinkSys Internet modem.
I'll leave you guys alone now. Thanks for the assistance!

Post all replies to the group to keep the discussion intact. All
unsolicited mail sent to my personal account will be deleted without
reading.

After furious head scratching, Uncle Joe asked:
