Compress Picture

Does compressing pictures only effect the files in the slideshow or does
it modify the original file also?

Assuming you are posting about the compress pictures feature in powerpoint 2002/xp then the answer is...

it does not alter the original image on disk.

No, in general it should not. Are you seeing it affect the original files?
The only way I could think of that it would affect the original files is if
you linked the pictures, then compressed them. (Having said that, I can't
get it to compress the file even in that circumstance.)
