config.mis error

When installing software I got an error and install was halted (I think it
was error 2932) It was related to this folder c:/config.mis. I verified
that I had permissions, but it will not let me rename or move this folder (as
suggested on other boards) I believe this folder was created by Office 2000,
so I thought I could uninstall Office 2000, install the software I was
initalliy trying to load, then re-install Office 2000, BUT when I go to
ControlPanle/UNinstall programs, the same error happens about halfway through
the uninstall of Office 2000.
Any solutions are welsome. I am very much a novice with this stuff so I am
hesitant to alter the computer without a pro.
Thanks

Hello J. From what you wrote, the problem isn't Office, it's in your
opoerating system. What operating system are you using (XP, NT, 2000, Me,
etc)? When was the last time that you re-installed the operating system?
Have you applied any online updates? Files located on the C: drive are
[usually] related to operating system processes. Files needed by Office will
be found under C:\Program Files\Microsoft\Microsoft Office... . Since the
uninstaller is also having problems, the config.mis file is probably needed
and is corrupted. As an experiment, rename C:\config.mis to C:\config.oldmis
and try to install your software again. You can always rename the
config.oldmis file back to its original name if that doesn't work. If it
still dies (or dies with a different error message), then a Windows
re-install would be indicated. You do have your original installation disks,
don't you? Re-installing the operating system will NOT hurt your existing
data files on your hard drive; choose the REPAIR option when re-installing
Windows.

Thank you Stephen,

I ended up temporarily halting my virus protection and then I no longer got
this error. Your solution would not work b/c it did not allow me to rename
the folder even though I had full permissions. It was weird. Thanks again
for your post. I did not know that I even had the option of repiaring XP
without wiping out the entire disk. That is good to know for the future.
