Configuring Groove 2007 for

D

dwacon

One requirement for a prospective Groove 2007 deployment is that all e-mails,
instant messages and other communications be captured and stored (with the
requisite metadata) for future indexing, searching and reporting. We are
investigating the installed and on-line documentation, and it *appears* that
Groove 2007 can meet this requirement. However, it is not 100% obvious how
this is done... and (more importantly) what level of time and manpower will
be required to deploy and maintain this functionality. Would appreciate
comments from those more knowledgeable with the tool (which is still new to
us).

Thanks.

Hi,

I am a newbie myself, but one of the ways you can store the emails, instant
messages and documents with their metadata is by using the Local and Remote
web services of Groove. So you have API's exposed on Local Groove clients
that could be used to interact with these documents.

Even better, you have something called as a Groove Data Bridge, that serves
a Data Access layer for all the Groove Interactions. It carries a server
identity, and once invited into a workspace, just like a normal user - you
always have the preview of the user interactions, identities, documents and
everything else that is going on within Groove.

I hope it helps.

Thanks,

Sameer

For archiving - I believe the Groove Servers can take care most of the items
(that are Groove-related). Other items may need the backup facilities (or 3rd
party utilities) for Outlook (Exchange) and SharePoint server deployment.

Ping me if you want to discuss more.

c1sbc, Isn't there a limit to which the GMS can archive the items? For
persistant store, there is an option to schedule backups on a periodic basis.
However, if there is a need to have access to all the Groove items on the fly
- then that should be programmable.

Hi SB -

I've posted a sample Bambuco script to back up selected files from a Groove
Files tool here:
http://www.infopatterns.com/products/toucanbambuco/developercenter.aspx

There are a few key difference between the Bambuco approach and and other
solutions -

* You can be selective about what content from a space gets backed up.
* Your files etc. are available for further processing such as searching,
storage in corporate repositories or conversion to other formats. You could
even copy selected files or other content from one space into another.
* You can run Bambuco scripts as a part of a larger scheduled job.
