Heads up on

When I spotted the Office 2008 update at http://www.macupdate.com/ it
sounded like an Office 2008 update but when i clicked on the link

http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/9648/microsoft-office-2008

Thay had some errors in the initial announcements.
it got confusing saying buy the 12.1 update but more info talked about
the 12.0.1 update and if you click on updater toward the bottom of the
page you download an Office X updater.

Go to http://www.microsoft.com/mac/downloads.mspx
You'll find the update there and the release notes are on:

http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=115072

I installed the update and now when I gtry and open Word I'm stuck in a repeating cycle. It opens the "first time" application, I go through the steps and hit finish. Then it opens the AutoUpdate where, once I hit check for update, it says none are there (of course) and I quit. When I try opening Word thereafter it goes through the same loop. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I am also having the same problem after installing SP 1. After going through the final steps of the setup assistant, I cannot open any of the office apps (only the setup assistant opens again)

Dale and Elliot, the Downloads page has a link to Additional Information
for the 12.1 update. Please read it and see if anything applies to you.

Everyone--before installing a major update, try some basic maintenance
like shutting down your computer for a few minutes, running Repair
Permissions after restarting it, install the update with NOTHING ELSE
LAUNCHED on the computer (shift-login to your admin account to prevent
background processes from interfering) and don't try to use the computer
while it installs. Then run Repair Permissions and restart the computer
again.

This is what I do, and even though I also make a clone before doing
major updates, I've never had to use it.

Additional Information
If you have trouble installing this update or using Office 2008
applications after you install them, try the following:

Make sure that the Microsoft Office 2008 folder is located in the
Applications folder on the startup volume. If it is at another location
on your computer, move it to the Applications folder on your startup
volume, and then try installing the update again.

Restart your computer and try installing the update again.

Make sure that the user account you use to authenticate the update
installer is an administrator account. For more information about
administrator accounts, see Mac Help.

Make sure that you downloaded the correct language version of the update
for your copy of Office.

If you rename or modify any of the files in the Microsoft Office 2008
folder, you cannot install product updates. To correct this issue, drag
the Microsoft Office 2008 folder to the Trash, and then reinstall Office
2008 from your original installation disk.

If you experience problems opening Office applications after you install
this update, restart your computer. If you continue to experience
problems after you restart, reinstall Office from your original
installation disk, and then install this update again.

I am having the same problem as Dale and Elliot. Has a solution been found? This couldn't have happened at a worse time as I'm in finals!

Normally I don't complain about Office problems, but this is ridiculous. As
mentioned, it's telling me that I can't install because I don't have a
qualifying product to upgrade. I seem to recall that on one of my computers
(maybe my 1.83 GHz Core 2 Duo Mini?) having to remove and reinstall Office
to get 12.0.1 to take. My MacBook didn't have any issues. Now my MacBook is
giving me the problem (haven't tried on my Mini yet).

Just letting off steam, but Office 2004 never gave me any problems with
installation of updates. But Office 2008 seems to be much more problematic.
This is not good.

No issues to report. I did notice the "View Installed Updates" button
has been removed from the new AutoUpdate v2.2.0.

Guess cause it doesn't work, so that's good. :) However, can you bring
up the About window in any app? I think that might show Last Update
Installed. Can you confirm?

I have the same endless roll of Setup Assistant starting up over and over again. I like how you acted like this i our fault. Anyone who post here and already has the update is computer savvy enough to install this update. Clearly something is wrong here if all of us can't even run Office Apps after the install. I have tried everything and no dice.

This needs to be addressed message boards are now telling all to stay away!

D

Daiya Mitchell

Well, there are certainly people who have installed it with no problems,
so it isn't happening to everyone. By the way, the truly computer savvy
know that they are taking a risk by being among the first people to
install an update, and they don't do it without backups and the ability
to go back easily.

If you've tried everything, guess there is nothing else you can do.
People who want to find a fix might start by going through the list of
MS recommendations that I posted, and reporting results.

Have you already tried restarting the computer?

What happens if you create a new user account in the OS and launch a
program in that account?

Hey you guys... I found this solution and it worked for me:

delete ˜/Library/Preferences/Microsoft/Office 2008/Microsoft Office
2008 Settings.plist
delete /Applications/Microsoft Office 2008/Office/OfficePID.plist

then start an app - put in serial number.
after that it starts the MS update again and then it should work

worked a treat for me after pulling out some hair this afternoon

Thanks very much for this, Karen. What do you mean by "it starts the MS
update again"? You re-download or re-apply it, or what?

sorry to be unclear. When i did this, it asks for the licensing, as i
said, then attempts to check for updates. once it comes up empty, you
can go through the rest of the steps (register or go to the site, or
close) and you will be able to open office 2008 programs.

Hey you guys... I found this solution and it worked for me:

Can you contact David Pelton with some details.See the files and info he
needs here along with contact info.

Just posted this fix:

[Office 2008 SP1] install causes setup assistant to loop

This situation is a result of when the Office Setup Assistant detects that
an invalid Product Key was used to install Office 2008. David Pelton,
Microsoft MacBU core lead test has outlined how to fix the problem and
requests users to contact him with info that will help chase down the issue
to keep it from happening in the future.

You will find details here:

_assistant_to_loop.html>

David would rather anyone to send me the files to forward on to him. I've
been promoted to spam filter. :)

Send me an email:

<http://www.entourage.mvps.org/support_options/email.html>

He needs the following info: place in folder and zip.

a) did you ever install the Office 2008 beta?

b) what version of Office 2008 did you have installed (12.0 or 12.0.1)?

c) please send me the following files:

/Users/username/Library/Preferences/Microsoft/Office 2008/Microsoft Office
2008 settings.plist

/Applications/Microsoft Office 2008/Office/OfficePID.plist

d) please send me your product key from your CD.

I am not sure why you ask but there is no problem bringing up the
About window and they all say 12.1.0.

I cannot find the new AutoUpdate. Do you know where MS decided to
hide it on the hard drive? I wanted to check my TM to see what version
was installed before the SP1 12.1.0 update? When I click in Check
for Updates under the Help menu and then go to About it says v 2.2.0

The Office 2008 MAU is now hidden away.
