Connection Problems

Hi

We were hoping that you could give us some indication as
to where we must look to solve a very frustrating problem
which is occuring continuously on my computer. The problem
is as follows:

My computer details are as follows:
Windows 98
Office 2000
40 Gb Hard Disc Memory
200+ Ram
I use Outlook for all my emails.
Explorer for Internet

What is happening is when we connect to the internet
and/or e.mail we find that every time we receive a mail or
send a mail whilst there is another mail coming in, we get
bell type sound (ringing) which results in the connection
stopping either incoming or outgoing downloads.

The connection stays live, it does not disconnect, but no
transfer of information takes place at all. We then have
to disconnect and then reconnect and then usually we are
able to send information until it happens again. Sometimes
we have to restart the computer before the problems fixes
itself.

I have Norton's 2003 installed and completely up-to-date
as of yesterday and have run numerous virus checks to no
avail. I have done Norton's utility checks and it has
repaired any faults that have been found, but this has
made no difference concerning this problem.

We were hoping that you would be able to assist us in
solving this problem or give us some ideas as to where we
should look or what we should try as we are about ready to
throw the computer against the wall. Any assistance you
can give us would be greatly appreciated.

Best regards
Naldi Pope.
