Contacts folder has disappeared from left-hand pane

My Contacts folder (& all subfolders) has disappeared from left-hand pane
under All Mail folders. consequently I can no longer drag across emails in
Inbox to store information in relevant folders.

How do I re-instate it?

Are we to assume Outlook 2003 is your version?
If so, they never did appear in that view. Contacts are not Mail folders.
You would use Folder List view instead.
