Content lost in Reply

I am unable to Reply to emails from (only) two of my contacts. After I compose my reply using Outlook 98, I hit Send and my message appears to be sent. The recipient does not get my text but only gets a symbol (ÿþ<) in the body of the message. When I check my Sent Messages folder I see the text I composed is missing and has been replaced by that same symbol. I've adjusted my Reply format to be Plain Text but it hasn't helped for these two individuals. What is happening? Thanks.
