Continual repagination in Word

I have some Word documents created in Office 2000. I have since updated to Office XP and when I open the documents created in 2000 and scroll down the page, it scrolls very very slowly and continually displays a message at the bottom of the document that Word is repaginating the document. Is this a common "fault" and is there any way to turn off the repagination when scrolling.
