Control program used to open hyperlink

Is there a simple way to force Excel to use a specific
program when opening a hyperlink?

For example, I have a text file named widget.xxx .
I created a hyperlink in Excel 2000 pointing to that file.
I would like the file opened in Notepad, rather than the
..exe normally associated with .xxx
