I wanted to convert a file saved in word to excel for easy cell refencing and
calculations

I'm not sure it's possible to "convert" it, but if the data is in a table in
Word, you can copy/paste it into Excel. Two caveats:

1. Any merged cells in Word will not be handled well in Excel.

2. If you have line breaks or paragraph breaks in any cells in Word, replace
them with spaces or another character before pasting into Excel. Otherwise,
the text will be pasted into two separate rows, and if you merge these cells
in Excel, you'll never be able to sort the sheet.
