convert a plain text doc western European windows to word

After doing a full recovery due to a virus all my word files are no
unreadable as they appear as Plain text documents Western European (Windows
format) how do I re-convert these back to word files??

Are you sure that they aren't showing up as wordpad documents as opposed to
notepad?

If so the .doc extension default app is wordpad instead of word, you just
need to right click select open with choose word from the window and tick
always open with this app to turn have your files use word as the default
app.
